Client case study:-
A South West Engineering Company employing 300 staff
The problem:
A production worker suddenly developed low back pain, which became so severe he was unable to work and was signed off sick.
Under the NHS he would have had to wait a minimum of several weeks for a scan and then longer for a subsequent outpatient appointment with a consultant.
This would have meant several weeks, if not months, off work with the resulting loss of function, social isolation and low mood which often accompanies a long period of sickness absence.
The solution:
Rick Taylor was consulted in his capacity as an occupational practitioner and a disc prolapsed was diagnosed.
Rick negotiated with the employee's line manager for him to see a consultant neurosurgeon privately who performed a scan, confirming the diagnosis.
He was operated on a few days later and was back to work within four weeks.
The benefit:
Long-term cost savings for the company of having their employee back to health and in the workplace in a much shorter space of time.
A motivated employee who was delighted with the service he had received from his company, Rick and the surgeon.
Client case study:-
A large chemical company
The problem:
The company was having problems controlling both short and long-term sickness absence.
This had been going on for several years and the management was keen to reverse the trend as the company was losing large amounts of money as a result.
The solution:
Through consultation with the senior and line managers Rick Taylor was able to introduce a system whereby all workers were seen by the company occupational health department if they were off sick for any significant length of time.
Employees were regularly reviewed and encouraged to come into the works for this review. If this was not possible they were kept under review by telephone or via home visits.
All short-term sickness absence was monitored and employees with repeated short-term sickness were seen to try to establish the underlying cause.
The benefit:
By making sickness absence a priority with line managers it was possible to reduce the overall rates of this problem, as well as to greatly reduce the time lost and the resulting costs to the business.
Client case study:-
An international engineering company
The problem:
A service engineer had developed heart problems, which required a pacemaker to be fitted.
The company was concerned as to whether he would be able to return to his previous work, which was physically demanding and also involved working in electromagnetic fields.
The solution:
Following an initial examination, Rick Taylor liaised with both the engineer's GP and his consultant cardiologist.
Arrangements were put in place for him to have his heart monitored whilst working in the electromagnetic fields and results showed completely normal heart activity.
His consultant was therefore happy for him to return to his previous role.
The benefit:
By involving all parties in the decision it was possible for the engineer to return safely to his previous job and for both him and the company to be reassured that there was no increased risk as a result of his medical condition.
